Here’s why you can make a difference

November 9th, 2023

Note: this post is primarily directed towards Christians, while I don’t think they are the only people who can make a difference, I do believe that Christ works through us and gives us power.

Do you want to make a difference in the world for Jesus? If so, what’s stopping you? Are you too busy, or afraid it won’t work, or do you think there’s really nothing you can do?

Well, guess what? I believe you can make a difference and let me tell you why: our God can do anything! Let me give an example from my life.

Let’s start with some background. I’m a 17 year old in high school who lives in upstate New York. I enjoy music and regularly attend my youth group and also play keys on the worship team. I love Jesus but I’m definitely not perfect.

My story starts last February when I was thinking one night about how there aren’t many ways for Christian youth to gather together in our area, so I had an idea to start doing youth worship nights. That was it, I wasn’t given an amazing opportunity other than that I knew piano. I just had an idea which turned into a vision that has led me to where I am today.

As a side note: right after I had that idea I went on a winter retreat with my youth group where the theme of the weekend of “God Is Able” which really helped solidify the idea that I should try.

Next I acted on it, I started talking to some people at my church, started talking to some members of my youth group’s band, and started talking to other churches (cause I wanted this to be a multi church thing). People were willing to support me which was awesome (sometimes all you have to do is ask).

Eventually I got a band together and my church let us use the building and we had an amazing worship and prayer night. Well, it wasn’t quite that easy. Figuring everything out was a bit complicated but God provided.

I didn’t play keys or sing at that night, instead I led the times of prayer. You don’t have to be able to do everything to organize something, you just need to find people to help you. One huge thing that I found is that if you’re someone who can organize an event people are often willing to help.

Now running a worship night might not be for everyone, but I’m sure there are things you can do. Whether it’s starting a small bible study or prayer group, or even just intentionally being welcoming or kind to people at youth group or wherever. Those types of things can be huge. My whole life changed because of one person who was willing to talk to a socially awkward 9th grader.

After that larger event I’ve been running smaller worship nights in almost a campfire style. I barely know how to sing, and I knew even less when I started them, but I love worshiping and love it when people worship together in a less formal setting, so I did it and it’s been really fun (and thankfully I’m also starting to learn how to sing).

In summary, look for opportunities to serve Jesus and if you can’t find one that works for you then make one! If Jesus wants you to do it, he will help you if you trust him.
