It was Christmas morning. All was quiet. All was still. He woke up and saw that it was 5:30 AM. His room was still dark and not a sound could be heard. Normally, he would sleep later (even on Christmas), but he was wide awake. It would still be a few hours till his family woke up, but he could not fall back asleep. Finally, he decided to get up and walk around. He wouldn’t open any of the presents, but maybe just see how many are down there. He grabbed the book he was reading (what else would there be to do?). Walking towards the door, he thought he heard the sound of light breeze, but it was coming from inside the house. He didn’t give it much notice.

Heading down the hall, he reached the stairs. The stairs themselves looked normal enough, but the bottom was shrouded in a mist. Well not a mist, more like just a darkness, but not a bad darkness. He found it hard to describe afterwards, but his best attempt was, “It looked like the darkness you see looking at the stars on a moonless night.” At this point, he realized something wasn’t quite right, but, as if it was beyond his will (or maybe just curiousity), he began to descend the stairs. As he neared the bottom, he could feel a soft wind on his face.

Feeling more excitement than fear, he walked right into the dimness. Before long, his eyes adjusted to the light and he looked around. There was empty fields of what looked like grass. He thought he saw a few sheep off in the distance. Above him was the sky and what a sky it was, full of bright stars like you’ve never seen. He could see the Milky Way covering the sky with a bright light. There was no moon, but he could see his shadow on the ground in front of him. He never knew the sky could be so bright. “I must be in the middle of nowhere,” he realized. Then he noticed one star, much brighter than all the others. It looked “closer”, but he knew it couldn’t be, at least not that much closer. All stars are millions of miles away.

As he continued observing his strange situation, he noticed a small town off in the distance to his left. It seemed to be almost right under the glowing star. “But that can’t be.” He thought. “I do wonder what star that is though.” While considering this, he noticed a road a little ways away that looked as if it was leading towards the town (and the star). “Nothing better to do.” He thought as he started towards the road.

Before five minutes had passed, he reached the road and began to walk along it. It was a dirt road about 12 feet across. In the dim star light, he could see a few newer footprints, but it didn’t seem too popular. Looking closer, he noticed hoof prints and a few thin ruts in the road. He wondered if he could be on someone’s farm or maybe near an amish town. Who else would have horses? Either way, he continued down the path in the dark. He had completely forgotten about Christmas, and barely remembered that none of this made any sense.

He kept walking for another half hour or so. Cresting a hill, he saw some other lights in the distance along the road. “Other people?” He thought. “At this time of night? What could be so important?” Before long he reached the back of their train.

“מָאן אַתָּה” A man looked down from one of the wagons.

Now, although he didn’t recognize the language, he understood him.

“I’m Noah.”

“Why are you here?” He asked with suspicion, “and where are you from? You appear to be a foreigner like us.”

“I’m from the United States of America, specifically New York.” Noah replied.

The man turned around and called out “Hey, Casper! Have you heard of ‘The United States of America’?”

“Nope why?”

“A newcomer said he’s from there.”

“Never heard of it?” Noah exclaimed. “It’s one of the biggest countries in the world.”

“I don’t think so.” The man laughed. “Around here, the biggest empire is Rome, though we ourselves come out of the east, but trust me, Casper would have heard if there was a bigger country. He’s one of the most well studied men I know. It’s him who first realized the sign, which I’m sure you’ve noticed.”

“Rome? Maybe two thousand years ago, but not now. Rome’s just a city in italy.”

“Just a city? Try telling that to Caesar Augustus, or maybe don’t.”

“Yeah I haven’t heard too many good things about the Roman Emperors.”

“Emperors? He’s the first one.”

“Wait that or they haven’t happened yet.”

“Yeah, but how would you know about them? Are you some sort of fortune teller or prophet?” asked the man with surprise.

“No no, not at all.” Noah said quickly. “I studied them in history class. I think I might be in the past somehow. What year is it?”

“What year?” the man asked confused. “Like from when?”

“Oh umm. We often count years from around the time of Rome. I think Augustus might’ve began to reign around year 27 BC. (Don’t ask why I remember that.)”

“Well it’s been 27 years since then.”

“Wait. So that means it’s year 1 AD.”

“Sure?” the man looked at him strangely. “So you’re saying that wherever you came from, everyone counts years starting from this current year?”

“Yep. Someone important was born that year (or this year I guess) if I remember right.”

“Interesting.” The man smiled. “Well, I think you can come with us if you’d like. You’re heading towards the star, right?”

“I was heading to the town, but yeah.”

“Come on in.” The man helped him into the wagon.

“Let me explain, a little about what’s going on. As I said, we’re from the east, but we’ve being journeying for months. It all started when Casper saw the new star.”

“New?”

“Yes, he studied the stars and knew them all, but one night this star appeared. Even from all the way back home, it was brighter than all the rest, and it seemed as though it had come out of the sky. It always sat in the same spot. We knew it must be a sign. We knew we had to follow it. Preparations took almost a year and the journey was many months, but we’re approaching the end. The star has stopped here. This must be the town.”

“So you journeyed hundreds of miles to follow a star?” Noah asked astonished.

“Precisely. Stars don’t normally just appear you know.”

“Fair enough.”

Before long, they reached the outskirts of the town. Now when Noah looked at the star, it seemed a little less like a star and more like a creature, glowing with a bright light.

“Why’s that star seem so close?” He asked.

“Because it is.” The man replied. “Most stars stay up in the heavens, but this one came down out of the sky to rest here.”

“It came? Stars are huge balls of hot stuff.”

“Hot stuff? Maybe that’s what they’re made out of, but that’s not what they are.”

Noah looked at the star again, confused, but said nothing more.

After a few minutes, the men gathered some stuff into packs. A few stayed behind to set up camp, but the rest headed into the town. As they entered the town, Noah could see that there was’t much to see. There were some houses, some fields, but ot a ton else. They reached the center and kept going. The star was almost right above them now. In front of them was a house. They knocked at the door and a older man came and greeted them. “Come inside. It looks like you’ve had a long journey.” As they came inside, Noah saw that it was a small place, but well furnished and lit by a few candles.

Off to the side, sat a younger couple holding their young Son. The men he had journeyed with came and bowed to the baby boy. Three of them presented the gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh. It was solemn and Noah followed suite. He was still holding “The Adventures at William’s Manor”, which he had been enjoying the night before this whole adventure. But since it was all he had, he laid it beside the other gifts. When Casper saw it, he smiled at him.

After presenting their gifts, the men introduced themselves. Capser was one of them, along with Melchior and Balthazar (the one Noah had befriended). A few others had come along. They called themselves Magi and told the story of their journey.

Once they finished, the husband (who’s name was Jospeh), looked at Noah. “And who are you?” he asked.

“I’m Noah. I’m from far away and I think from a future time, but I don’t know how I got here. The Magi found me and I decided to follow them.”

“That’s strange, but stranger things have happened recently.” He looked at his Son and chuckled.

“I’d tell you more.” He contined. “But if this Son is who we’ve been told, then you’ll hear about him or maybe already have. His name is”

“Jesus.” finished the Baby’s mom.

Noah woke up. “So that’s who reset the calendar and why we celebrate Christmas?” He considered this for a minute. “If that’s what really happened, then He must be quite important. I mean we still celebrate it 2,000 years later.” It was 7:00 AM. He heard his brothers running down the hall. “It’s Christmas.” He smiled. His book was still sitting on the shelf. He got up and went downstairs, and his whole family got to hear about the crazy dream he had that night.
